If ever proof were needed that flautist, saxophonist, producer, label boss and Gurkha's son Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne is one of the most prismatic figuresin contemporary UK jazz, it is these two recordings. First up, an album of ragas improvised during a one-day session in Pakistan with local instrumental quartet Jaubi and on synth drone, Polish keys player Marek Pedziwaitr. Having piqued interest with a three-track taster released earlier this year, Tenderlonious and Co. further explore the melodic frameworks offered by Indian classical music, with tracks based on traditional ragas beginning slowly, sometimes playfully, before evolving into steady rhythms flecked with imaginative bursts.
Opener ‘Shalah Bagh’ finds Tenderlonious' soprano sax painting brushstrokes in the air before facing off against Kashif Ali Dhani's tabla and vocals. ‘Azadi’ turns a devotional raga based in the 12-beat ektaal cycle into a fluid conversation between all players, while closing track ‘Impressions’ lets Tenderlonious flex his flute chops in passages that soothe and shimmer.
All of which, you feel, was ballast for Quarantena, an album of lo-fi beats and soundscapes magicked from Tenderlonious' armoury of synths, drum machines and assorted instruments, and indulging his thing for sci-fi and fantasy movies along the way. There's much to love here: the epic title track with its swelling strings and horns. The F-you joy of ‘Lockdown Boogie’. The flute- and-marimba led ‘Rococo's Raga’, a product of his Lahore sojourn. Progressive stuff from South London's own Renaissance man.
