Hope you've got a big satchel to take this home from the shops: I guess, when you play as gigantic a kit as Bozzio, you have to put out a 4CD plus DVD release. But with a nice irony, you won't find a single live drum beat on this epic work. Instead, the CDs – loosely themed under the titles ‘Fusion’, ‘Classic’ and ‘Ambient’ – reflect Bozzio the composer, whether it's reimagining Korn material or posting songs like ‘Six Miniatures for Guitar and Piano’, originally composed for McLaughlin and Corea. The second ‘Fusion’ set is especially dark, with titles like ‘Fascist’, ‘Beast’ and ‘Psychopath’ that not-so-subtly signpost their mood. With everything composed on software like Reason/Sibelius/ProTools the mood can feel claustrophobic, locked down, lacking air and space. Yet it's precisely this industrial-scale tightness that makes the release so compelling. And there are other influences, notably Ravel and Debussy, which suddenly and sweetly enter. The CDs are embellished by Bozzio's own illustrations and a DVD of a drum solo and a time-lapse of his kit setup, which'll please even the most anal of sticks men.
