Recorded live at The Forge in London's Camden Town, this third album from The Bannau Trio – vocalist and composer Nia Lynn, flautist Gareth Lockrane and pianist Ross Stanley – presents intimate chamber jazz of an extremely high order. Album opener, Ralph Towner's ‘Renewal’, features Lynn's captivating, freewheeling vocalese which segues into a compelling reimagining of Tom Waits' ‘Soldier's Things’. From thereon in, the level of invention never flags. Lynn contributes three fine originals, the folk-like ‘Linger’, the rhapsodic ‘Lonely Ghosts’ and the lyrical sweep of ‘Precious (Reprise)’. Norma Winstone, a key influence on the singer whose Somewhere Called Home inspired the formation of the trio, guests on ‘Upon The Hill’ (a Nikki Iles/Nia Lynn cowrite), a stand-out which features imaginative solos from Stanley and Lockrane (on bass flute). Other standards include a languorous ‘Who Can I Turn To’ and an impressionistic reworking of ‘Some Other Time’. This superbly recorded and enchantingly intimate collection of songs is further testimony to the all-inclusive aesthetic of Whirlwind Recordings
