It's always fascinating to hear the first fruits of a new musical collaboration, and this debut album from The Ben Cox Band presents a number of fine new songs from the pens of co-founders Cox and pianist Jamie Safiruddin. Written by Cox, the title track features the first of several irresistibly catchy chorus hooks. Beginning with a looping three-note figure on the piano (later taken up by Chatterton), Safiruddin conjures up refreshingly different harmonies on ‘And I Love Her’, while Cox's ‘Sea’ whips up some dramatic shifts in tempo and ear-catching backing vocals. Penned by Safiruddin and album producer Ian Shaw, ‘George’ provides the album's beautiful, still centrepiece. If Cox seems slightly less assured on standards – paired with the inimitable Claire Martin he sounds a bit out of his depth on ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ (a lovely solo here from Safiruddin) – the album ends on a sun-kissed high, with fellow member of Vive, Emily Dankworth, joining Cox for a duet on Jobim's ‘This Happy Madness’.
