Percussionist John Hollenbeck's The Claudia Quintet can sound like French café music arranged by Steve Reich for a jazz ensemble. Hollenbeck is a composer of very imaginative resources; his acoustic chamber ensemble, made up of vibraphone, accordion, clarinet/sax, bass and drums might though suggest something sonically on the genteel side. But there are big moments of dissonance, freewheeling jazz improv and contemporary beat knowhow on the band's eighth release (they are coming up to their 20th birthday), Super Petite. Hollenbeck takes a conceptual approach on tracks including ‘Nightbreak’ and ‘Philly’, both deconstructions of bebop licks but with different outcomes: ‘Nightbreak’ is a contrastingly slo-mo version of Charlie Parker's famous amphetamine-charged sax break on ‘Night in Tunisia’, bearing almost no resemblance to the original whereas ‘Philly’ departs from the usual signature sound of the band, shrewdly converting a Philly Joe Jones drum lick into a swinging free-bop romp. Tick-tock interlocking parts are nowhere to be heard as Chris Speed leads with a thrilling, snaking sax solo, with Matt Moran's vibes adding hazy slabs of organ along the way. More of that please.
