Hutchings recently called time on Sons of Kemet, no surprise given the launch of his label Native Rebel Recordings, and his bandmates’ blossoming solo projects. If focus was his aim, the direction of his musical language suggests he’s found it here, tunnelling into cyclic riffs more intensely than ever, and leaving his bandmates (who separately form duo Soccer96) to bring the synth-sax-drums trio’s trademark brand of heady, technological maximalism. Chances to hear the full range of Hutchings’ capabilities are rare, but overarching coherence is the goal on a third release that’s more live mix than album.

It’s muscular stuff, a clarion call for energetic, overwhelming music designed to be played as loudly as possible. Leavers is the driving force, commanding a plethora of buzzy synths, string washes, and wispy vocal effects to give the sound ingenuity and depth. ‘Pyramids’ combines 1980s-inflected synth-led EDM with the broken techno of Bugz in the Attic, creating a future club classic to sit alongside the stomping ‘Atomic Wave Dance’; there’s also a welcome appearance for Hutchings’ swirling shakuhachi on ‘Aftermath’.

One for ravers rather than boppers, this is music straight from club culture, and marks another top release from the trio.
