This really is the best working band anywhere at the moment. Six long-overlooked legendary jazz musicians (plus the underrated talent who put it all together), playing with a fire and passion that completely belies their ages. The inclusion of Donald Harrison on alto is a major plus. He's been making quite a few ‘concept’ records over the past few years. But now he's back playing the music he was born to blow. Billy Harper in particular really shines on this album, arguably the band's best to date. His composition ‘Sir Galahad’, which opens the record, was originally recorded for his debut on Capra Black back in 1973, but he has completely updated it and it now sounds really contemporary. Billy Hart, playing better than ever, contributed the attractive minor-mooded ‘Renada’ and there are two brand new tunes by bassist McBee – the bluesy ‘Slippin' and Slidin'’ and the funk-filled ‘Dance of the Invisible Nymph’ featuring down and dirty solos by Eddie Henderson, Donald Harrison and George Cables and an excellent arrangement by the man-behind-the-scenes David Weiss, who produced the CD and scored five of the tracks as well as bringing in his own tune (the intense sombre ‘Three Fall’) and taking strong solos on three titles. Cables' best original is a heartfelt tribute to another–much–missed musicians' musician, Mulgrew Miller. The remaining two tracks are both by Harper – the CD title tune with some extra fine solos and the closing ‘Dance Eternal Spirits Dance’, which again has a timeless funk feel. This record is what jazz should always be about.
