For the follow-up to their 2018 debut, Rabbit On The Run, Zurich-based guitarist Dave Gisler's trio present the entirety of a live performance given at the unerhört-Festival in their hometown in 2019, at which they played as an expanded quartet featuring American trumpet maverick Jaimie Branch.
As it happens, it's an inspired match, as both Gisler and Branch combine a thorough grounding in jazz with a penchant for punk attitude and alternative energies. The set starts as a billowing soundscape, with Branch's horn piercing the clouds like flashes of forked lightning. Choppy group interplay with sizzling electric guitar elicits high peals from Branch, signalling a lugubrious slouch into a lumbering groove in the style of Miles's Bitches Brew. Next up, a petulant blast of thrash rock goads Branch into using effects pedals to construct a huge bank of howling roars, harking back to her early years playing DIY basement noise shows. There's a mellow moment of stoner vibes, a heavy free-form bash not unlike Peter Brötzmann's Full Blast in full flight, and the whole thing winds up with the gloriously-titled ‘Better Don't Fuck with the Drunken Sailor' – a louche blues with Branch giving her best New Orleans growl. If you're pining for the glorious and unpredictable joy of live performance, give this one a try.
