Any album presenting itself with Julian Lage and Randy Brecker on the front cover should be worth at least a punt. Unfortunately, the guitarist and trumpeter’s sonics and edge go largely unrecognised here. David Nichtern conceived his lockdown project in layers, alongside his mindfulness and educational project Dharma Moon. The result is a set of songs conjured in isolation and a production that neither relaxes or bites. The songs are generic, production values are unimaginative, given producer Matt Oestreicher’s credits include Stevie Wonder and Snoop Dogg, and the drum track unyielding.
The 11-song set opens with 'Samba for Julio', nice solos from Brecker and Lage and static support. 'Rise and Shine' is chirpy and 'Pandemoonia' and the baroque-tinted 'Thinkin’' hint at 1980s Bob James. Elsewhere, pastiche and cheese are the order of the day. Other lockdown projects have been much more vibrant and musically gripping.
