‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ may not be a tune that grabs you by the throat, but the Dialogues Trio use it to kick start this ten-song debut release. Dialogues is a most fi tting title for the band, as this is a trio that revels in talking between itself, swapping and sharing ideas with a lyrically light step. Heinen’s the star voice here, whether gently dissonant on ‘Brigante’ or laying down the urgent, Bernard Herrmann-like theme to ‘Waltz For Rossie’. And if it isn’t too paradoxical for a trio to engage in dialogues, then this is also a trio that doubles as a quartet, with Julian Siegel guesting, most notably on his beloved bass clarinet on ‘Spins Wins’. This is Siegel in classical mood, rather than in his spunkier, trans-Atlantic or Partisan mode, and he lays down some serpentine lines against Scott and Di Biase’s gently knotted rhythms. An air of chamber music intensity underwrites most of the band’s performing and writing, creating an ambience that some who like a tang of blues or swing may feel a shade cool. But don’t let that put you off this intriguing set.
