This 2CD special edition culls material ranging from Moore's first 1961 EP to a previously unissued track from a 1977 session. Mostly, however, it focuses on the trio's heyday in the early to mid-1960s, with material from the albums The Other Side of Dudley Moore and Genuine Dud. It's hard to think now of a piano jazz trio initially inspired by Erroll Garner being in the forefront of UK popular music, but Moore's profile as a comedian and the group's weekly appearances on the BBC's Not Only… But Also brought their work to such an audience that bassist Pete McGurk is quoted in Simon Spillett's excellent liner notes as saying: “He's doing more for jazz in this country than anyone”. McGurk's suicide in 1968 was a terrific shock to all of us who followed the trio, but his role is admirably filled on some of these tracks by Jeff Clyne. (Peter Morgan later took over the bass chair, but is not represented here.) This anthology gives a very clear idea of why Moore's work was so popular even with a non-jazz audience. Standards are presented with an approachable melodic statement, before the inexorably logical and hard swinging choruses that follow. Originals – including a couple of forays into quite avant-garde territory such as the “exploding cadence” on ‘120’ – have enough wit and humour to bring in an audience that might have no idea about Andrew Hill or Cecil Taylor. Spillett makes the point that the version of ‘My Blue Heaven’ here absolutely catches the trio's ability to swing in a medium groove, but it's just one of 22 tracks that genuinely do rank as “the best” of Moore.
