When Eivind Aarset debuted on Jazzland with Electronique Noir back in 1998, it was clear he was a guitarist with a conception and style quite unlike any guitarist, past or present – in fact, he seemed to be sending us messages from the future. Almost a quarter of a century later he still retains a sorcerer’s zeal as an electronic colourist; you don’t talk in terms of “chords” or single note runs when it comes to Aarset, but of compositions filled with areas of musical colour, part aural Rorschach sound imagery that slowly coalesce into a set of compositional designs that take shape in our imaginations. But on ‘Didn’t See This One Coming’ (appropriately), the sound clouds part and out steps a bad-axe guitarist, Led Zeppelin-style. In fact, the whole album seems to combine his distinctive and mysterious sound palette with more rumbustious guitar work – the space age imagery of ‘Inbound’ that has extra terrestrial sounds swimming through the mix, while ‘Outbound’ is a boogie from beyond the final frontier.
