The world without Larry Coryell is a lesser, if considerably quieter, place. Not, of course, that Coryell was all rock excess: ever exploring, his years of acoustic work and his fascination with Brazilian musics will be re-visited over time. It was just that The Eleventh House brought out the raucous in Coryell, who could unashamedly shred with the best. But when you're playing against the equally huge-hearted and equally missed Mouzon maybe you didn't have a lot of choice but to turn it up to 11. But it mustn't be forgotten that Eleventh House was a band, not just a Coryell vehicle, and cuts like ‘The Other Side’, replete with a coruscating trumpet break from Lawrence, or the meditative ‘Suite’, again with Lawrence outstanding in Miles-mode, reveal a unit that's as tight, but loose, as you could want. There's even a disco thrash orgy, the aptly titled ‘Some Greasy Stuff’, which doubtless the Jazz Police would throw up their hands in horror at, but you know there'll be a few playing air guitar along with it, buoyed up by its barmy energy. So a belated farewell Larry, it's been a gas.
