This is the third album from the London boogaloo groove merchants, and it's a model of solid, unpretentious, soul-jazz. The sound of a band taking care of business. As leader Etwell makes clear in the liner notes: “We're not breaking new ground through experimentation or electronics, searching for a new sound or voice, we're just making the music we love the way we want to do it.” Most of the grooves are mid-tempo dance ones, with Price sticking admirably to those offbeat accents and resisting the temptation to get fancy. The frog-in-the-throat Hammond tone is another constant delight. There are moments when the music (and the dancers) can take a breather: the closer, ‘Dear John’ (dedicated to Etwell's late, great uncle), gives space to stretch out and show sensitivity at a leisurely pace. The one miss-step is a cover of Michael Jackson's ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something’. When Reilly adds those falsetto MJ whoops we're dangerously close to tribute band territory.
