Algorithms – picked out in the title of this charming disc – represent our global digital future to an almost terrifying degree. And, to a much pleasanter degree, drummer Aleks Girshevich – one-third of the trio responsible for making the album – promises to be a not negligible part of the human future of jazz. He's only 12-years-old but he's already providing the beat for this trio featuring his father, pianist Vlad, and veteran bassist Eddie Gomez. And a very sophisticated beat it is too. His great inspiration is Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernandez as he lays down ‘three-handed grooves’ that sound as though ‘a drummer and an invisible percussionist are playing at the same time’. Dad Vlad has drawn on the language of the Baroque on several cuts; Bach's inspiration is audible on a number of tracks, and the addition of strings augments the classical feel of the session as a whole. But it's ultimately a jazz record, deeply imbued with a love of improvisation and groove.
