To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Sun Ra’s HeliocentricWorlds albums that were released on ESP-Disk’ in 1965, producer Richard Alderson was gathered together with Arkestra veterans Marshall Allen and Danny Ray Thompson (along with a suitably tuned orchestra) for a session – with original scores by Scott Robinson – that re-enters, rather than re-creates, the orbit of the work. The presence of Allen and Thompson here is testimony enough that Robinson’s vision is approved, but the decision to use vintage instruments – such as the bass marimba that was played on the original recordings by Sun Ra – gives the music an extra dash of authenticity. The music played is certainly in the spirit of the Heliocentric Worlds sets, an exploration in sound, rhythm and sonic texture that jets jazz into another dimension. Add to that the sensual spaced-out cover art from acclaimed 1960s science-fiction artist Richard M. Powers and Heliosonic Toneways is truly out of this world.
