This stunning production – in terms of packaging, production, an audiophile pressing on 180 gram vinyl and well conceived and executed music – follows on the heels of the equally remarkable Sine Qua Non: Serge Gainsborough Re-Imagined. Here, Aram has composed a suite inspired by the book and screenplay of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, and samples of dialogue from the film momentarily surface and disappear to add to the overall mood of this project. Recorded in Geneva, it has the talented Swiss pianist and ECM artist Colin Vallon, who together with Norbert Pfammatter on drums are members of the singer Elina Duni's quartet. And to complete an A-list of Swiss musicians the suave tenor saxophone of Andy Scherrer combines seamlessly with Wheeler and Aram to produce a warm, centred ensemble sound. Importantly, the soloists work in service of the music, content for their ideas to remain in touch with the composer's intentions in a way that gives great depth and meaning to this music. As it unfolds over two long playing discs, there may be moments of drama and tenderness but they do not stray beyond the haunting, yet ultimately captivating mood of the album.
