Finck and Ball are long time collaborators who enjoy an easy swinging partnership, which also includes writing all the material, bar a straight ahead ‘The Way You Look Tonight’. They play a generally down-tempo, cool New York groove, like the Partisans’ Siegel and Robson suddenly donned DJs and drank martinis. At their best, as on the title track, they’re sinuous and don’t overblow – Finck especially is restrained in a Herbie Ellis-ish way – they can handle boppish lines with an alert elan.
But they rely heavily on Nussbaum’s presence; the drummer drives and urges, notably on ‘Conundrum’, getting Ball to finally break sweat. He’s equally crisp behind the boppier theme of ‘Geppetto’, which is one of the three tracks illumined by Brecker and his crystalline clarity. There’s much to enjoy, like Finck’s elegant chordings on ‘East 86th’, but at times It’s Not That Far is curiously muted, despite those rhythmic cajolings.
