This vinyl box, actually presented in the form of ‘an album’ in the way a collection of 12-inch 78rpm records were presented during the shellac age, replicates the CD set of the same name first released in 2006. The cover art and CD liner notes are carried forward to vinyl presentation, as is a compilation of live radio recordings – which had been previously unreleased prior to the CD compilation – are heard on the sixth and final disc here. These 180gm albums comprise all the tracks from Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet, Workin’, Relaxin’, Steamin’ and Cookin’, with one track – ‘’Round Midnight’ – taken from Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. These five albums are not reissued in the original form, with the original cover art (these are reproduced in miniature in the liner notes), but in the order recorded. This will irk serious collectors who prefer facsimile reissues, but it does provide for the second time of hearing (the first was the CD box) how the tracks emerged in the studio and how the juices flowed to create them. The only thing that is not carried forward to vinyl are the digital files contained on the enhanced DVD portion of CD disc four, containing five Miles Davis solo transcriptions. The vinyl sound is exemplary, warmer perhaps than the CDs and it possibly goes without saying that these albums would form the basis of any serious modern jazz collection.
