A single track, over an hour long: this is precisely the sort of long-form improvisation for which Australian trio The Necks are best known. The appropriately titled Open is their 17th album, and their 11th on Chris Cutler's superb ReR Megacorp label. Trying to describe it without resorting to the adjectives ‘glacial’ or ‘mesmeric’ feels a bit like trying to eat a donut without licking your lips. But I'm going to try. Let's describe Open instead as cinematic, immersive, iterative, unfolding like slow-motion petals; at times acoustic, at others electronic, the track is by turns ruminative, brooding, tender, rumbling, ambient, and even threatening. The single, 68-minute piece represents a slap in the face for MP3-shuffle culture, and a glorious celebration of the album as single unit. Granted, there are no alarms and no surprises – but to soundtrack contemplative staring through train windows, Open has rarely been bettered.
