There are vibes players, and then there is Gary Burton, a class of one. By some margin the most accomplished vibist jazz has known, those lucky enough to have seen him in live performance when he decides to pull out all the stops will have seen one of the seven wonders of the world. His playing – a combination of virtuosity and lucidity – is of a level many aspire to, but few ever reach. Although in more recent years he has juggled many projects, such as his long standing duo collaboration with Chick Corea that has brought them five Grammy awards, his tango band, collaborations with vocalists and all-star get togethers and more, his decision to form a new quartet two years ago returned him to a contemporary, hard swinging context where his style is more fully realised. Opening with ‘Caminos’, he and Julian Lage's statement of the complex theme is effortless while his solo that follows has such drive and forward momentum it sets the tone for the album. While there's some outstanding playing by Burton, there is also a coming-of-age quality in the playing of Burton's protégé, Julian Lage, which is equally absorbing. Whether it be the jazz waltz ‘Jane Fonda Called Again’ (what a great song title), the more contemporary ‘Jackalope’ and ‘Sunday’s Uncle' or the neat precision of ‘Legacy’, Gary Burton – even in his 70th year – seems to be getting better and better.
