Kicking off with a superb arrangement of Kern and Hammerstein's oft-recorded ‘The Song Is You’, this seventh CD from vocalist, bassist and cellist Nicola Farnon presents another collection of brilliantly arranged standards and originals. Whether it's the stripped back, bossa-inspired take on ‘Spring Is Here’, the gently swinging ‘Sing’ penned by Sesame Street songwriter Joe Raposo, or the heart-melting takes on Abbey Lincoln's ‘Throw It Away’ and Janis Ian's ‘She Must Be Beautiful’, the latter featuring Farnon's captivating cello playing, Farnon's singing goes straight to the heart. Of the quartet of fine originals, it's the melancholic slow burn of ‘It’s Just Got To Be That Way' that impresses most. In her musical partners, pianist and co-arranger Dave Newton, guitarist Jim Mullen and drummer Steve Brown, Farnon has assembled an absolutely stellar cast who provide the unfailingly simpatico accompaniment. Hats off once again to the irrepressible Andy Cleyndert, who not only recorded, mixed and mastered the album, but also contributed bass on a moving interpretation of ‘I Get Along Without You Very Well’.
