The last Rodriguez Brothers album was in 2008 on HighNote and made this writer's Top 10 releases list. Since then pianist Robert has made a couple of brief appearances at the Scott Club, while Michael has issued an excellent leader album on Gerry Teekens' Criss Cross label. As you'd imagine with all the percussionists on this new CD, Cuban rhythms of various kinds and colours are predominant (the Brazilian-flavoured ‘Love Samba’ being one exception) with Robert's rumba-based ‘Fragment’ one of the wildest tracks. Carlos Henriquez' bass plays an important role on every song and his solos, especially on ‘Fragment’ and, arguably the most arresting track, Mike's clever ‘Descargation’, with its Eddie Palmieri-influenced tumbao groove, are some of the record's many highlights. The brothers keep their family involved by dedicating ‘Latin Jacks’ (his pronunciation of ‘jazz’) to their grandfather, while their own father Roberto's drumming adds to the timba-infused closing ‘Minor Things’. Michael is one of the very best trumpeters around today. He has a round, gorgeous, golden tone and a rare sense of melodic beauty in his solos. His only ballad feature ‘Tu Mi Delirio’ is a gem. His brother's comping is always as interesting and as personally individual as his solos. The percussion is subtle, but swinging throughout and the vamps that close several of the tracks could go on for hours for my money!
