This sextet, drawing on musicians from Amsterdam, Chicago and Boston, doesn’t just get its name from a Steve Lacy tune – the connections run deep in several directions. Bennink played with the late saxophonist in the 1980s, bandleader Dijkstra was his student not long before he died in 2004 – and almost all the tunes on this album (as on its predecessor, Vol. 1) are Lacy compositions. This time around, the repertoire focuses on some of Lacy’s more experimental pieces from the 1970s, such as ‘The Oil’, a programmatic composition, for which Lacy gave the simple performance instruction “thick and slippery” – here interpreted as a pleasingly woozy blast. Most imaginative, though, are the full-band reimaginings of pieces only ever recorded as solo saxophone works: ‘Skirts’ skitters from sly swing to unpredictable turbulence showcasing Bennink’s phenomenal snare technique; while ‘Threads’ is lurching stop-start leant a queasy sheen by Djikstra’s use of the Lyricon – a vintage analogue wind synthesiser. It’s a smart lesson in how to imbue an essentially nostalgic project with enough surprises to keep it fresh and vital.
