Unlike other volumes in this series deriving from Europe No.1 broadcasts, most of this has been around since the days of LPs. The date of ‘16 Avril 1961’ displayed in the packaging is clearly a typo, for the booklet itself refers repeatedly to the previously known concert of the 18th, and indeed the last 12 of these 17 tracks were leased (sold?) to Riverside for a double album that appeared after Monk signed with Columbia. This first European tour of Monk with his own group meant a first reappearance in Paris since his controversial solo gigs in 1954, and early in this set there seems some audience discontent, especially when during the opening ‘Evidence’ he stops backing Rouse and (presumably) starts dancing. But he clearly wins over the listeners with a typical programme of now-hallowed originals and four standards, including solo versions of ‘Body And Soul’ (repeated as an encore), ‘Just A Gigolo’ and inevitably ‘April In Paris’.
