Sometimes straight ahead is how it has to be. From the clarion call of Waterman’s horn on ‘Welshcake’, you know four square where you’re at: swinging, melodic, uplifting yet, of course, most cool.
Harken! marks 20 years of Three Way’s illustrious association, yet even over that time, the music remains fresh. As a drum free trio, there’s always been a chamber-like intimacy to their music, spacious, with room a-plenty to stretch and relax. And even the addition of the often big-voiced Etheridge doesn’t break that magic. So, the quartet shuffle along on the blues-kissed ‘Ab4bc’, (with Lodder chirruping away on Rhodes), or swings vividly with Etheridge all clean-lined sophistication on ‘Ambition’.
The fusion-fuelled ‘Resilience’, if not exactly a false note, doesn’t fit easily with a gorgeous trio ballad like ‘Billie’s Blessing’ (which doesn’t feature Etheridge). If not exactly a gate crasher at the birthday party, some may prefer the trio cuts to those with Etheridge on board, but then again Waterman’s fluent flugel does benefit from Etheridge’s chords on the waltzing ‘Kindness’.
