This follow-up to Austin's acclaimed 2015 debut Nothing But Soul will only serve to enhance the Bay Area vocalist's burgeoning reputation. Produced by Grammy Award-winner Richard Seidel and co-produced and arranged by trombonist Mitch Butler, this modern-day freedom song project celebrating the resilience of African-American culture opens with a brace of powerful Austin originals, ‘Blues Creole (For Amede)’, a homage to the virtuoso Louisiana Creole vocalist and accordion player Amédé Ardoin, plus the blistering ‘Greenwood’, which connects the dots between Ferguson, Watts and the 1921 pogrom that destroyed Tulsa's flourishing Black Wall Street neighbourhood. Backed by a truly exceptional band, in addition to majestic readings of ‘You Must Believe in Spring’ and ‘Someday We'll All Be Free’, Austin pens new lyrics for Charles Mingus's ‘Better Git It in Your Soul’ and Ornette Coleman's ‘The Blessing’, presents a terrific wordless exploration of Coltrane's ‘Resolution’ and delivers a compelling take on the gospel song ‘Ain't No Grave’. Driving home the album's central theme of liberation, Austin brings the album to a close with the civil rights anthem ‘Keep Your Eyes on the Prize’, cast as a captivating duet with bassist Whitaker.
