Hamasyan, 31, is an Armenian pianist who has released eight albums, won a clutch of important awards and accolades from the likes of Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau and also Herbie Hancock, who told him, “Tigran, you are my teacher now”. This divine five-tracker has been issued as a companion piece to last year's wildly acclaimed solo project, An Ancient Observer; it's a continuation of a sound that synthesises and internalises influences ranging from classical music, 1970s rock and Swedish death metal to funk, hip hop and Indian Carnatic traditions, while keeping the pianist's own blend of modern jazz and Armenian folk music in the foreground. Dedicated to his hometown, Gyumri, famously a centre of folk and traditional Armenian music, and to the crazy world we're living in, it is laced with minor, melancholy chords and imbued with a fierce beauty. Spacey vocals, swerving musical tempos and ancient-to-future grooves lend idiosyncratic flair; tradition is respected, reinvigorated. Gorgeous.
