My, this album from German trumpeter/vocalist Till Brönner and US keyboard maestro Bob James, now in his ninth decade, is so the opposite of the angsty spirit of 2020. Which is a good thing, IMO. On Vacation is the sound of two great jazzers getting you in the mood for a languorous summer break – perhaps in the South of France, where they recorded it (at La Fabrique). There are standards – ‘Basin Street Blues’, ‘Save Your Love For Me’ – and originals by both musicians. Despite its ambiguous title, ‘I Get It From You’ is no super-spreader anthem but rather a coolly carefree celebration of love. (The album was recorded in 2019, so the absence of Covid awareness should come as no great surprise.) ‘Lemonade’, floated on a delicate, Brazilian-tinged rhythm track, rhymes ‘wander’ with ‘yonder’, features a bucket-and-spadeful of la-la-las and advises: ‘Forget the masquerade – let's have a lemonade'. Sometimes musical profundity is the result of not digging too deep into life's great mysteries. A pleasure.
