Lassy and Mäkynen were key figures in the upsurge of Finnish jazz around 2005 that added to the notion of a Scandinavian jazz resurgence. At the time, Lassy and Mäkynen were members of the Five Corners Quintet, then the leading exhibit in young Finnish jazz. From there their careers have intertwined, appearing on each others records, and it is perhaps inevitable they would collaborate in the pared-down surroundings of a duo. Mäkynen is a classy drummer in an acoustic context – Timo Lassy Band, Verneri Pohjola Quartet, Aki Rissanen Trio, Juka Escola Trio – but equally at home with electronica in his own Teddy Rok Seven. He draws on both these skills during this duo album, while Lassy is a full-blooded soul-jazz player with a tone so broad you can fry steaks on it. On an album consisting of 13 tracks, they move effortlessly from hard-hitting 4/4 grooves, free improv, electronica and all stations in between, all enhanced by Mäkynen's suave post-production techniques. Each cut clocks in at around three minutes, which allows them to get to the point, and get out without waffle, gratuitous grandstanding or aimless meandering. It was the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe who coined the phrase “less is more” in 1947, and it sums up this album perfectly.
