Timo Lassy emerged as a saxophonist to watch in The Five Corners Quintet back in 2005, recorded by Antti Eerikainen (the moving force) and Tuomas Kallio's Ricky Tick label. A class act who garnered a huge following in Finland, Lassy went on make a name for himself in his own right, but never far away were his old compadres from Five Corners – here Jukka Eskola, Antti Lotjonen and Teppo Makynen help make this live date at Helsinki's Savoy Theatre a memorable one. Although Eerikainen's Ricky Tick label has gone, his creative enthusiasm is honoured with the Ricky-Tick moniker for Big Band Brass with Juka Eskola on lead trumpet and solos (‘Waltz Unsolved’) leading the charge. From thoughtful contemporary big band (‘Undecided’) to all-hands-on-deck powerhouse excitement (‘Sweet Spot’, ‘Northern Express’), this is neither highbrow nor lowbrow, just high-quality jazz built around Lassy's regular quintet. When playing his home turf in Helsinki, his concerts are sell-outs; this extremely modest but hugely accomplished player has succeeded in making well executed acoustic jazz a box office attraction.
