The internationally acclaimed Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma offers her personal slant on the contemporary free bop lineage with unwavering dedication. You could say it's the same with her mentor and partner on this new release Sonic Halo, the St Louis-born contemporary sax giant Greg Osby. For them there's never any question of being distracted by any fashionable new trends. But it's the differences between them that also make this high quality recording stand out from the crowd. The pair's intricately woven yet lyrically intimate dialogue dominates Postma's perfect opener ‘Sea Skies’, while Osby's contrasting angular hip hop-orientated ‘Facets’ follows as well, highlighting the diversity of the material on the CD. Aside from originals, there's a lyrically impressionistic version of the classic ‘Body and Soul’. The sidemen on the date have their say too. They are Linda Oh, the bassist in Dave Douglas' current quintet, drummer Dan Weiss, and pianist Matt Mitchell, another member of the Dave Douglas quintet as well as Tim Berne's Snakeoil, who's riveting solos from start to finish make him one to watch.
