Almost without anyone noticing here in the UK, the Tingvall Trio have been climbing up the European rankings. In Germany, for example, where they are based they have won three prestigious ECHO awards, some critics are whispering they are on the way to EST-style European jazz super-stardom. Their music certainly has that genre crossing appeal that EST exuded, with its melodic clarity and accessible rhythmic patterns that often echo those from popular culture. With previous album Vägen figuring on the, albeit lower reaches, of the German pop charts, the similarities with EST begin to mount up. This album, recorded live at concerts during their 2012 European tour, include ‘Nu Djävlar’ and ‘Mustasch’ from their debut album Skagerrak (2006), ‘Trolldans’ and ‘Monster’ from their second album Norr (2007) that the crowd love, while the ballad-like ‘Utsikt’ ranks as the trio’s top-ranking download. There are extended versions of the popular ‘Vägen’ and ‘Hajskraj’, the former the title track of their last album which did much to excite the European critics, reaching number one on the German jazz charts. One thing is for sure, they’re a good band and in live performance are quickly able to build a strong rapport with their audience – for evidence of that go no further than this album. Keep an ear open for them, they’re going places.
