Like meeting a friend you haven't seen in years, but manage to pick up a conversation with immediately as if the years had simply melted away, Tingvall Trio seem very familiar, comforting even, with their big tunes, melody-laden themes grounded in the music of EST, even resembling the Neil Cowley Trio at other times. The title track (‘Vägen’ means ‘the road’) has a bass line that is eerily reminiscent of a baritone line played by John Surman on ‘Binky's Beam’ from John McLaughlin's classic album Extrapolation, and Tingvall also hints at Jarrett periodically, although on ‘Tuc-Tuc Man’ it's more in Neil Cowley territory as is ‘Efter Livet’, laden with strings and horns. There's a lovely bass figure from the German-based Cuban Calvo at the beginning of ‘Den Ensamme Mannen’, and the album is stocked full of delights and stop dead gorgeous moments although one or two of these are a bit twee. But Tingvall score highly for their emotional depth and communicative flair and it's no wonder they've picked up two prestigious German Echo awards. If audiences here find them sufficiently different to Cowley and co, and there's no reason why they shouldn't, they could become firm favourites in the UK too.
