Like his Indonesian compatriot Dewa Budjana, Tohpati has a boggling technique that embraces every mode of jazz-rock guitarism. Unlike Budjana's more recent work, however, Tribal Dance reveals no obvious link to Tohpati's own heritage. True, most of these cuts begin with samples of Indonesian music: a monkey chant for example sets off the spectacular lines and lary power chords of ‘Rahwana’. But the intros bear no relationship to what follows. Instead Tohpati just revels in revealing how well he can mimic heroes: Scott Henderson and Jeff Beck seem particular faves to follow, though sudden lyrical streams of Metheny gatecrash in, and, in a rare moment of mystic lull, Tohpati comes over all Terje Rypdal on the balladic melancholia of ‘Midnight Rain’. All hi-energy fun, with that five-star rhythm section strutting their usual stuff, but you may as well check out the originals that inspire Tohpati as listen to his loyal echoings.
