Pianist Tom Gibbs comes from Glasgow, current hotbed for the new jazz generation in Scotland. He is a member of the assured post-bop saxophonist Paul Towndrow's group and with ex-Birmingham conservatoire Euan Burton, the double bassist here, he recorded the CD Forgotten Things a couple of years ago, on which the pianist was especially impressive. Released on the American London-resident bassist Michael Janisch's prolific imprint, Gibb's Fear of Flying features the London-born, New York-resident saxophonist Will Vinson. Here Vinson concentrates more on soprano than alto (his first choice) but Gibbs' tunes have a perky, folk-like quality that suits the higher-register horn, and they're a sign too of the pervasive influence of Gibbs' mentors John Taylor and, especially, saxophonist Julian Argüelles. Similarities to the English saxophonist Adam Waldmann's pastoral Kairos 4tet are also evident in this respect. On a few tracks Gibbs runs close to Brad Mehldau's song-like harmony as a bed for his themes, although he's far less intense as a pianist. Unadorned lyrical ideas are delivered with a very charming, crisp occasionally swing-ish tone. Gibbs is definitely one to watch.
