Cardiff-born saxophonist Tom Harrison has assembled a very accomplished quintet for his Duke Ellington (and Billy Strayhorn) tribute project: Cleveland Watkiss up front and centre, Robert Mitchell on piano, Daniel Casimir on bass and 2015 MOBO nominee David Lyttle on drums. This disc, released on Lyttle's own label, draws on performances given this February at Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, London and the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham.
The seven tracks run to almost an hour and a quarter: Harrison is generous with the space for improvisation he leaves to his collaborators – perhaps a mite too generous in places, and the overall effect would have benefited from a bit of editing. But allowing for the odd bit of self-indulgence, there's an infectious quality to the performances that's hard to resist: you'll probably find yourself joining in with Watkiss's extended scat call-and-response with the audience on Sy Oliver's ‘The Minor Goes Muggin’’.
