Polish trumpeter Tomasz Dabrowski has been living in Copenhagen since 2008, but he retains a strong connection to the mother country: apart from a Danish saxophonist and a Norwegian drummer, every member of his current group is from, or based in, Poland. What’s more, this album is conceived as a tribute to his former mentor, the great Polish jazz pioneer, Tomasz Stańko, and, to seal the deal, Dabrowski is playing the actual trumpet Stańko used in the 1990s.
He wields it well, for sure, employing a precise articulation, imbued with sighing melancholy, which lends tracks like the opening ‘JR’ a certain gorgeous gravity, as sumptuous horn charts float serenely over a tightly clenched rhythm section.
On pieces like ‘Old Habits,’ there’s a hint of the painterly sophistication of Miles Davis’ mid-1960s quintet, luxuriating in a lyrical post-bop setting, while still doggedly inhabiting turbulent forms.
To stop things from getting too comfortable, Dabrowski throws in some deft electronics. On ‘In Transit,’ a tricky head puzzle is obliterated by a sudden eruption of howling noise, while ‘Sandy’ finds the horn drenched in psychedelic echo-tracers not unlike Rob Mazurek’s corkscrew squeals. It’s a bold, adventurous date with ideas to spare.
