Todd Barkan, the former owner of Keystone Korner (Jazzwise 162 and 166), recently ended his association with Jazz At Lincoln Center, so we might hope to hear more of those legendary recordings done from the club's mixing board. Resonance already released one such album of Freddie Hubbard, and this unlikely combination is worth preserving, especially as the two pianists only ever played together for two weeks. Flanagan and Byard both possessed a huge knowledge of the jazz tradition but, what is less common, they each had the ability to play sympathetically behind others (Tommy with Miles, Sonny, Trane and Ella; Jaki with Maynard and Mingus). That might have been a recipe for caution, but both were also strong soloists and, on the five tracks where they battle it out, there's a compelling tension and no excessive politeness. They also do three solos each, Flanagan's being all Strayhorn tunes while Byard plays Julie Styne, Stevie Wonder and Chuck Mangione. A chart tells you who does what in the duets but, even without that, the excitement is palpable.
