Dan Berglund's post-prog ensemble Tonbruket have established their signature of spacey atmospherics and sonic effects-inflected minimalist prog over two recordings on Munich's ACT label, the former home of the bassist's highly influential euro-jazz piano trio EST. Sonic ghosts from 1970s rock past surface as sources disparate as flamenco, electronica and country music infiltrate the mix. Each musician makes their presence felt including the pedal steel advocate Johan Lindstrom and Wildbirds & Peacedrums/FIRE! drummer Andreas Werliin whose forceful grooves are coloured by anything from garage punk and post-rock to hip hop. Tonbruket work the contrasts well from the driftingly mellow Pink Floyd-ish ‘Music for the Sun King’ and likewise ‘Sinkadus’ to the epically proggy ‘Tarentella’ that turns into a glam rock fuzzbox boogie reminiscent of the 1969 smash hit ‘Spirit in the Sky’. Although Forevergreens is marked more by its post-rock ambience than an expressive group dialogue characteristic of the best jazz ensembles, Tonbruket mix a nostalgic palette of sounds and soundtrack-like moods with a finely-balanced range of electronic effects (in places reminiscent of Bristol's Get the Blessing's more recent work) that's still very appealing.
