While one track from this 1962 Bennett/Brubeck White House summit (‘That Old Black Magic’) had previously been issued on record, the rest of the hour-long set was long deemed lost in Sony’s vaults – until a chance discovery in December 2012. And if The White House Sessions doesn’t rank with their very best work, the collection will surely be a must-have for Bennett and Brubeck fans. The Brubeck Quartet’s set kicks off with – what else – ‘Take Five’, taken at an incredible lick. ‘Nomad’ is introduced as being based on Middle Eastern rhythms. Well, if a swinging 4/4 counts as Middle Eastern then I guess that’s right. Bennett’s recording of his signature song, ‘I Left My Heart In San Francisco’, had entered the Billboard charts just days before the White House gig and is the pick of his solo set. The finale, four songs featuring Bennett with the Brubeck Trio, brings the house down.
