It’s an excellent month for fans of the great Anthony Dominick Benedetto. The Complete 1958-1961 Ralph Burns Sessions presents two complete original albums, My Heart Sings and Hometown, My Town, both originally released on Columbia. The former pays homage to some of the great stylists that influenced Bennett in his formative years, from Ella (album opener ‘Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me’ being a Fitzgerald favourite) to Al Jolson (‘Toot, Toot, Tootsie’). The orchestra features jazz luminaries such as tenor saxist Zoot Sims, vibes player Eddie Costa and guitarist Chuck Wayne, all of whom are featured in Burns’ exemplary arrangements. A song suite dedicated to his beloved New York, Hometown, My Town includes typically big-hearted interpretations of ‘The Skyscraper Blues’, ‘Love Is Here To Stay’ and more. Recorded at the legendary CBS 30th Street Studio, New York – birthplace of some of the greatest recordings in history including Kind of Blue – both sessions (plus an additional four bonus tracks) sound terrific. The Complete Frank DeVol Sessions brings together three albums, Long Ago and Far Away, To My Wonderful One and Alone Together. Including such stellar talents as Herbie Mann, Larry Bunker, Bucky Pizzarelli and Bennett’s long-time accompanist, Ralph Sharon, Bennett gives us ‘My Foolish Heart’ (which he would later record with Bill Evans), ‘Tenderly’ and a suitably otherworldly ‘Out Of This World’. An additional seven songs recorded during the sessions, previously issued as singles, round off another fabulous reissue.
