It's safe to say that Tony Bevan is one of the world's leading practitioners of the much underused bass saxophone. In his far too infrequent solo performances on the hefty lung-buster, Bevan summons bone-shaking tones that serve as a powerful reminder of the physical nature of sound. So, it's to his credit that, throughout these duets, he successfully avoids simply steam-rolling over Matthew Bourne's piano. Instead, Bevan slots into a tuneful headspace, presiding over a fluid outpouring of phrases that incorporate enough room for Bourne to comment and colour. That said, Bourne seems uncharacteristically happy to hang back, offering sympathetic shading often rumbled up from the lower end of the keyboard. On tenor, Bevan makes the most of upper registers, leaping into high, dancing filigrees that give Bourne the chance to interrogate with mercurial runs. This satisfying document of an intelligent and playful encounter is only available as a download from the website of Bevan's aptly named Foghorn label, www.foghornrecords.co.uk, on a pay-what-you-like basis. Do the right thing.
