As his sleevenotes make clear, the late Scottish painter-musician Alan Davie was one of percussion legend Oxley’s most favoured collaborators. In this collection of previously unreleased late 1970s recordings (eight over 45 minutes in all, each titled ‘Particular’ and all recorded in Rush Green, Hertfordshire), one senses why: the empathy between the pair is palpable, and unusually for this kind of improv, they sound as if they’re having a whale of a time. Electronic boings and blips, percussive fizzes, scrapes and bangs, and piano trills emanate from the speakers as our intrepid musicians take us on an improvised journey into the electro-acoustic netherworlds normally inhabited by intimidating ‘serious composers’ like Stockhausen and Varese. Only a lot more fun. As ever, this music is about texture and space rather than tunes and narrative, but it’s surprisingly accessible, and a compelling, valuable record of an intriguing collaboration between two like-minded explorers of the musical margins.
