The inspiration for this languidly expansive suite of tunes, all bar one composed by Norwegian trumpeter Tore Johansen, was provided by a series of artworks by Jannik Abel, who appropriately provided the cover imagery. Johansen has assembled a fine team of collaborators – tenorist Andy Sheppard and bass player Arild Andersen both come courtesy of ECM, and atmospherically the results aren’t far removed from the great German label’s output. Sheppard and Andersen both get to stretch out a little on the lovely meditative middle section of the titular five-part suite, as does Bugge Wesseltoft on piano and – you might have guessed, not that he’s in the least bit greedy in his contributions – Johansen on trumpet. The only non-original track here is an icily resplendent, echoingly restrained cover of Eden Ahbez’s ‘Nature Boy’. The well- known words – which presumably illuminate the thinking behind the music – are printed in the CD booklet but aren’t actually given voice.
