Tortusa is essentially the project of one man, electronics wiz Bishop, who lives in Stavanger, Norway. For Bre, his second album, he’s assembled an extraordinary lineup of Norwegian musicians. However, Tortusa isn’t a ‘group’ at least in the traditional sense of players getting together in a room to perform or record: Bishop has taken samples of live performances by each of the musicians before adding his own analogue synths, field recordings and computer processing to create the 12 sparse, reverb-drenched soundscapes on offer here. Sometimes the participants are rendered unrecognisable by Bishop's treatments, but fans of Aarset and Henriksen will definitely warm to the contemplative pulses and chilly washes on Bre; the contributions from the stellar lineup are cleverly used, and always on point. Breistein's sax on the album's title track is lovely, and Henriksen's playing on ‘Ubevegelige’ and ‘Preget Uten Minne’ has a haunting, almost Arabic, atmosphere.
