This transatlantic group led by British pianist Trevor Watkis paid tribute to the legendary Jamaican trumpeter Dizzy Reece with a well-received UK tour in 2019, and this recording shows that the project has thankfully not lost any impetus in the intervening years. Watkis has always been a versatile player, but his forte is arguably an acoustic post-bop register, which is the chosen format here, and he and his accompanists prove more than able to do justice to Reece’s witty, smartly detailed tunes. While all members of the band take good solo slots the highlights of the record are arguably the moments of ensemble playing where everybody locks into the same pulse and drives forward, often with Monkish propulsion. No track does that better than ‘Manhattan Walk’, a slinky, offbeat rhythmic strut with stabbing unison lines that feel as if they will open up to a horn or piano improvisation but never do. And it works all the better for it. Hopefully the band will be back on the road soon enough.
