The centrepiece of this live performance is a 22-minute improvisation called ‘The Unfinished Conversation’ – which is a pretty apt name for the latest instalment in an intimate dialogue that has been going on, in one form or another, since Watts and Weston first met in the 1970s, and which shows no sign of running out of ideas. In fact, it's rather like a rambling chat between old friends who have spent so much time together they can now finish each other's sentences, or switch subjects mid-breath without leaving the other stranded. Watts darts from fast, blustering brays to pointillist tonguing of the reed, while Weston embellishes his dense, two-handed narrative with subtle, bluesy flourishes before subsiding into a mood of placid calm. Even in the most tempestuous moments there's a sense of patient and unflustered exploration as the pair negotiate twists and turns with a singleminded and eminently satisfying joie de vivre.
