These three have done this sort of thing before, inspired by the great Peterson, Pass, Ray Brown trio, and here they are again. Milverton is a keyboard all-rounder, hugely accomplished, and has never concealed his admiration for Oscar Peterson while Price has the kind of guitar facility that thrives in fast company, bassist Sucholdski acting as the on-stage referee as his two chums joust with each other. In reality this is a proper three-way collaboration, a company of equals, this clearly evident on their three-way ballad medley, other tracks taken at hectic speed, the levels of improvisatory to-and-fro almost breath-taking at times. A case of compatibility breeding success.

Take Bob Dorough's ‘Devil May Care’, this given a turbulent run-through in Latin style, the energy palpable, Milverton's skittering runs matched by Price's effusions before its sudden stop. The familiar shape of 'The Man I Love' emerges in stately fashion, Price outlining the theme and suggesting placidity before Milverton's adventurous, cascading solo, all locked hands and natty harmonic variations changes the mood, Price up for the challenge, the bass lines ensuring momentum. Peterson's fetching ‘Love Ballade’ is more serene, the melody neatly harmonised, Price's bubbling solo just right. A superb track. Sucholdski takes the theme of ‘Lullaby of the Leaves’ for a run as Milverton comps and Price kicks in, leaving this excellent bassist to finish. Nothing but good things here and great tune choices too. A certainty for my 2021 Top 10 and a genuine tonic in these parlous times.
