Saxophonist Paul Booth is one of the co-leaders of TRYPL, the other two being trumpeter Ryan Quigley and trombonist Trevor Miles. They make up a formidable British frontline that are seasoned session players – the album is recorded in Wincraft, Steve Winwood's private studio setting in the Cotswolds – as well as specialist performers of Latin American rhythm-rooted bop, having shared the stage in various working bands on the salsa and latin-dance scene from the 1990s boom onwards. The pianist Alex Wilson is another man of dedication and experience who combines both a jazz sensibility with an authentic skillset. Here Wilson fills out a commanding bottom end with his groove-heavy vamps assisted by a bubbling percussionist Edwin Sanz. His ‘Scallywag’ is an amphetamine-fuelled salsa complimented by a section of contrastingly leisurely pace. The set is made up of band originals besides a smoochily atmospheric cover of Osvaldo Farrés ‘Tres Palabras,’ highlighted by trumpeter Ryan Quigley's solo, who's otherwise sizzling throughout. If you're looking for high-end mainstream UK jazz-latin (rather than latin-jazz) sounds, then you've come to the right place.
